Rules of Clinical Engagement: Why Partnerships With Clinical Organizations Are Important For Any Healthcare Startup
Hospitals, academic institutions, and big pharm can serve as a crucial resource and partner for healthcare startups, benefiting all involved, most importantly the patients.
Taura L. Barr Ph.D., RN, FAHA is Chief Science Officer at Valtari Bio Inc. and Associate Professor of Nursing at Ohio State University. Prior to Valtari Bio, Dr. Barr was an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing and Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University. She received her BSN and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Her team is involved in innovative interdisciplinary partnerships between academia, government, and industry partners, aimed at characterizing how individual variation (genes, environment, and immunity) plays a role in recovery from brain injury (stroke and traumatic brain injury). She has received $5 million in grant funding, and $4 million in venture financing to support her research and has over 40 publications in peer reviewed journals, one issued patent, and multiple patent filings under review.

Understanding Reimbursement Strategy & Return On Investment - (On Demand) Wednesday, April 21st

Being able to answer, “Will my device get reimbursed?” is critical, even for early stage companies. From early investment rounds, investors want assurance of a return on their investment, and while they may not expect early stage companies to have all the reimbursement answers, they do expect companies to have identified the correct reimbursement questions. In this training Carole Klove will focus on why it is important to create an implementable business strategy that highlights and incorporates obtaining reimbursement and defining the value proposition and return on investment for a product so it can be successfully commercialized in the ever-changing healthcare environment. Carole has over 35 years of experience in healthcare as a nurse, an attorney (partner at Davis Wright Tremaine), a consultant (partner at Deloitte), and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer at both UCLA and Stanford. Most recently, she led process improvement and governance projects at UCSF. Carole takes a practical approach to address healthcare operations, with an ultimate goal of improving systems and organization performance through innovation.

Susan Solinsky s the Chief Growth Officer at Ellipsis Health, a health tech company that has pioneered the first AI-powered, speech-based vital sign to quantify depression and anxiety for scalable behavioral health management. She also serves as the Director of HITLAB’s Women’s Health Tech Initiative and is a a founding LP of the How Women Invest Fund. The How Women Invest Fund is dedicated to shifting the venture capital landscape by supporting women-led companies, with a focus on women of color.

Whether it is an investor email or an in-person pitch, it’s essential to learn the communication etiquette that investors prefer. Investors speak a certain language.
Startups receive 1:1 sessions with Susan, Brittany, and angel investors to prepare for final pitch day.

Each startup in the bootcamp will be given five minutes to pitch their products or ideas to potential investors and a live audience. Each pitch is followed by five minutes for Q&A and feedback from the panel of judges.
