Rules of Clinical Engagement: Why Partnerships With Clinical Organizations Are Important For Any Healthcare Startup

Hospitals, academic institutions, and big pharm can serve as a crucial resource and partner for healthcare startups, benefiting all involved, most importantly the patients.

Taura L. Barr Ph.D., RN, FAHA is Chief Science Officer at Valtari Bio Inc. and Associate Professor of Nursing at Ohio State University. Prior to Valtari Bio, Dr. Barr was an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing and Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University. She received her BSN and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Her team is involved in innovative interdisciplinary partnerships between academia, government, and industry partners, aimed at characterizing how individual variation (genes, environment, and immunity) plays a role in recovery from brain injury (stroke and traumatic brain injury). She has received $5 million in grant funding, and $4 million in venture financing to support her research and has over 40 publications in peer reviewed journals, one issued patent, and multiple patent filings under review.

Instructor: Carole Klove RN, JD | General Counsel & Chief Nursing Officer, Elemeno Health

Being able to answer, “Will my device get reimbursed?” is critical, even for early stage companies. From early investment rounds, investors want assurance of a return on their investment, and while they may not expect early stage companies to have all the reimbursement answers, they do expect companies to have identified the correct reimbursement questions. In this training Carole Klove will focus on why it is important to create an implementable business strategy that highlights and incorporates obtaining reimbursement and defining the value proposition and return on investment for a product so it can be successfully commercialized in the ever-changing healthcare environment. Carole has over 35 years of experience in healthcare as a nurse, an attorney (partner at Davis Wright Tremaine), a consultant (partner at Deloitte), and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer at both UCLA and Stanford. Most recently, she led process improvement and governance projects at UCSF. Carole takes a practical approach to address healthcare operations, with an ultimate goal of improving systems and organization performance through innovation.

Instructor: Yatin Patel, MD FACP | Founder & CEO, Mission Growth Investments & D4HI Venture Fund

In this live training, you will hear directly from Dr. Yatin Patel, a seasoned investor about what metrics really matter, so you can focus your energy, and stop wasting your efforts on things that don’t really matter. Yatin is an Internist with a passion for supporting startups that will have a positive impact on people’s health and lives. As managing partner at D4HI Venture Fund 2021, he desires to facilitate investments by physicians in early stage healthcare startups and support them in their journey to success. Yatin’s previous experience includes investments in over 50 startups as an angel investor and through online platforms. In 2019, he co-founded Mission Growth Investments (MGI), a physician group investing in healthcare startups.

Arup will walk you through how Elemeno Health secured funding, and highlight the mistakes they made along the way, so you can be sure to avoid them while offering you a window into what’s possible for you once you raise money and scale your startup. Dr. Arup Roy-Burman, is a pediatric physician and Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at UCSF. Arup is also the founder and CEO of Elemeno Health, a mobile platform that helps healthcare organizations engage frontline staff to deliver consistent best practice, and bring quality, safety, and efficiency to the point of care.

Susan Solinsky s the Chief Growth Officer at Ellipsis Health, a health tech company that has pioneered the first AI-powered, speech-based vital sign to quantify depression and anxiety for scalable behavioral health management. She also serves as the Director of HITLAB’s Women’s Health Tech Initiative and is a a founding LP of the How Women Invest Fund. The How Women Invest Fund is dedicated to shifting the venture capital landscape by supporting women-led companies, with a focus on women of color.

Additionally, Brittany is founding partner and emerging fund manager at Coyote Ventures, an early-stage femtech investment firm.

You only get one chance to make a great first impression and you don’t want to blow it. What you say and how you say it are incredibly important when it comes to fundraising! Whether it is an investor email or an in-person pitch, it’s essential to learn the communication etiquette that investors prefer. Investors speak a certain language.

Startups receive 1:1 sessions with Susan, Brittany, and angel investors to prepare for final pitch day.

Nadine Afari moderates our pitches, inspiring participants to stay fired up! Nadine has mentored numerous startups given her expertise in product development, to production ramp-up and commercialization.

Each startup in the bootcamp will be given five minutes to pitch their products or ideas to potential investors and a live audience. Each pitch is followed by five minutes for Q&A and feedback from the panel of judges.
